Life Cast of a Lizard

A bronze cast of a lizard mounted on marble.
Life Cast of a Lizard, probably 19th century, gilded bronze, 8.8 x 7 x 2cm. National Gallery of Art.

She's tiny and she's bronze!

This lizard was probably cast in the nineteenth century, "from life," meaning that the lizard itself was used to create the mold. It was purchased by Lisa and Leonard Baskin somewhere between 1960 and 1985, and the lizard has been cold-stamped on its underside between its forelegs. This object is owned by but not on display at the National Gallery of Art.

A close-up of the lizard's face.
